GTA 5 launched in 2013 and became one of the best-selling games ever. GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026 into a completely different era of hardware and expectations. Here's how they compare — with a firm line between what's confirmed and what we're still expecting.
At a glance

The confirmed changes
Several differences are locked in. GTA 6 returns to Vice City within the larger state of Leonida — a modern take on the series' Miami-inspired setting. It stars Jason and Lucia, with Lucia being the first female protagonist in the modern GTA era. And it's built exclusively for current-generation consoles, so it isn't held back by decade-old hardware the way GTA 5 was at its original launch. For the full list, see everything confirmed about GTA 6.
The generational leap
The biggest change isn't any single feature — it's the jump in fidelity and simulation. GTA 5 was engineered for consoles with a fraction of today's memory and no solid-state streaming. GTA 6 is designed from the ground up for fast SSDs, far larger memory budgets and modern GPUs, which enables a denser, more reactive world.
What's still expectation, not fact
- World size: widely expected to be bigger, but there's no official figure — see our map-size breakdown.
- Online mode: almost certainly returning in some form, but structure and timing are unconfirmed — see GTA 6 Online.
- Systems & mechanics: most gameplay specifics remain unannounced. Be skeptical of "leaked feature" lists.
Technology: the invisible upgrade
The most important differences between GTA 5 and GTA 6 are the ones you don't see on a box. GTA 5 launched on hardware with a fraction of today's usable memory and mechanical hard drives that streamed the world slowly. GTA 6's target consoles have vastly more memory and NVMe solid-state storage, which means denser crowds, richer traffic, more detailed interiors and fewer loading seams. Physics, lighting and animation systems have all moved on by more than a decade. Even if the two games shared an identical map, GTA 6 would feel dramatically more alive simply because the hardware lets it simulate far more at once.
Tone and setting: a modern Vice City
GTA 5 satirised a pre-smartphone-saturated Los Angeles of 2013. GTA 6 returns to Vice City — the series' Miami analogue — but drags it firmly into the present, complete with the influencer culture, viral video and always-online absurdity of today. That shift changes the humour, the missions and the texture of the world. Where GTA 5 poked fun at reality TV and startup culture, GTA 6 has a whole new era of targets. What clearly carries over is the DNA: an open crime saga, sharp satire, a soundtrack-driven world and the freedom to cause chaos. GTA 6 is an evolution of that formula, not a reinvention of it.
What hasn't changed
For all the differences, the DNA is intact. GTA 6 is still an open-world crime story in a fictional American city, still built around the freedom to approach the world as you please, and still backed by Rockstar's obsessive attention to environmental storytelling. The radio stations, the pedestrian commentary, the sense that the city has a life independent of the player — these have been Rockstar hallmarks since GTA III, and there's no reason to expect GTA 6 to abandon them. The mission structure, the character-driven narrative, the mix of comedy and genuine dramatic weight: these are what make the series distinct, and they carry across settings and generations.
The online question
GTA 5 owes much of its longevity to GTA Online, which kept players engaged for over a decade with regular updates and a living economy. GTA 6 almost certainly returns to some form of online multiplayer — but how directly it mirrors GTA Online's model is unknown. The online dimension could be the biggest practical difference between the two games in the long run: a well-supported mode extends a game's relevant life by years. We track what's confirmed (very little, online-wise) in the GTA 6 Online breakdown and log every claim on the tracker.
Quick answers
Is GTA 6 a sequel to GTA 5? It's the next mainline entry, but a new standalone story in a new setting — you don't need to have played GTA 5.
Is the map bigger than GTA 5's? Widely expected to be, but there's no official figure yet.
Can I play as three characters again? No — GTA 6 centres on two leads, Jason and Lucia.
Will GTA 5 still get updates? That's up to Rockstar; treat any claim either way as unconfirmed.
