GTA 6 is the first mainline GTA built exclusively for current-generation consoles. No last-gen port, no technical compromises for 10-year-old hardware. Here's what that means for how the game looks and performs.
Current-gen only: why it matters
GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 — hardware that was already dated. Every version since has carried the technical DNA of those machines: limited RAM, slow hard drives, and NPC counts designed for decade-old CPUs. GTA 6 starts fresh on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which means the game's fundamental architecture is designed around 16GB of unified RAM, NVMe SSD storage, and custom AMD GPUs capable of hardware ray tracing. This isn't an upgrade — it's a different ceiling.
The RAGE engine
Rockstar's proprietary Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) has powered every GTA and Red Dead since GTA IV (2008). Each major release brings a significant engine update. GTA 6's RAGE version has been in development alongside the game itself for over a decade — the 2022 leaked footage showed physics systems, NPC AI and rendering approaches that were already notably more advanced than GTA 5's engine even in prototype form.
NPC density and behaviour
One of the most visible differences in the trailers is crowd density. GTA 5's pedestrian system was constrained by the PS3/360's limited CPU thread count — each NPC required processing budget that had to be rationed carefully. PS5 and Xbox Series X have significantly more CPU cores, and the SSDs eliminate the streaming bottleneck that required unloading NPCs as the player moved. The trailers show beaches, streets and venues with noticeably more people — and those people appear to have more individual behaviour states.
Lighting and ray tracing
The trailer lighting is immediately striking. Vice City at night shows reflections in wet streets, neon bouncing off glass, and light sources that cast coherent shadows rather than the baked approximations of older engines. Whether GTA 6 uses full ray-traced global illumination or a hybrid approach (which is more common in open-world games due to performance cost) hasn't been confirmed, but the visual result is clearly beyond anything in GTA 5 or Red Dead 2.
Texture and material quality
SSD loading means textures can be streamed at their full resolution without the compression artefacts that older hardware required. The trailer shows material detail — fabric, skin, concrete, water surfaces — at a level consistent with what current-gen hardware enables when developers aren't constrained by last-gen support. Character faces in particular show a generational leap over GTA 5.
Draw distance and world density
GTA 5's LOD (level of detail) system — where distant objects render at lower resolution — was noticeable if you looked for it. SSD streaming and the memory bandwidth of current-gen hardware allows for higher-quality assets at greater distances, and denser detail in the mid-range. The aerial shots in the trailers show city environments that remain detailed at distances that would have been impossible on last-gen.
Load times
GTA 5 on PS4 took approximately two minutes to load into the game. GTA 5 on PS5 (via backward compatibility optimisation) loads in under 20 seconds. GTA 6, natively designed for the PS5 SSD, should achieve similarly fast load times by design rather than as a post-launch patch. This also enables faster travel and respawning — less time waiting is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement across a long playthrough.
Will there be a PC version?
GTA 6 launches on console only. A PC version is expected to follow — see our PC version guide — and will likely push the graphics further with higher frame rates, ultrawide support and additional detail options. The console version is the baseline, and PC will exceed it.
